The Sociology Department at Georgetown University brings together scholars dedicated to helping students comprehend the societal and cultural influences that define human existence. Our program inspires students to thoughtfully examine intricate social and cultural dynamics while nurturing a lasting dedication to social justice issues. We cultivate innovative thinking about collective welfare and empower students to utilize their knowledge and abilities for creating a fairer world. Our curriculum equips students with diverse analytical tools for conducting thorough, theory-based examinations of social phenomena across local and international contexts. Through hands-on research and experiential learning in Washington, D.C. and other locations, students gain practical application of these skills.
Sociology majors must complete ten departmental courses: six core requirements, two Core Topic Lectures, and two Advanced Seminars. The mandatory courses include: Introduction to Sociology, Methods of Social Research, Sociological Theory, Statistics for Social Research, plus a two-semester Senior Seminar covering Data Collection/Analysis and Analysis & Writing. Students should complete Sociological Theory, Methods of Social Research, and Social Statistics during their junior year. The Methods course involves developing a research proposal that forms the foundation for the senior thesis, finalized during the Senior Seminar. Students considering study abroad programs or alternative completion plans should coordinate with the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
