The department provides graduate programs culminating in a Master of Science in Mathematics, Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics, Master of Science in Applied Mathematics, and Master of Science in Mathematics Education. With 70 full-time professors and 20 postdoctoral researchers, the department primarily operates from Altgeld Hall, an exquisite Romanesque stone building at the center of the Illinois campus, which houses one of the globe's finest mathematics libraries. Approximately 150 PhD candidates benefit from a cooperative environment and a vibrant calendar featuring around twenty-five weekly research seminars and lectures. The Applied Mathematics MS program caters to those aiming for careers in applied mathematics or preparing for doctoral studies in the field, though direct progression to the University of Illinois PhD program is uncommon. Participants can select from three specializations: Optimization and Algorithms, Scientific Applications, or Computational Science and Engineering. This 32-credit program typically takes 18 months to complete, with an optional thesis. Enrollment is available for both Fall and Spring semesters. While financial assistance is limited, some students may secure teaching assistant positions after admission.
