The Master of Education and Certificate of Advanced Study programs equip experienced educators with enhanced skills and knowledge, enabling them to serve as catalysts for educational improvement within their schools and districts. These programs also include master's degree tracks designed for career changers with non-education bachelor's degrees who aspire to enter the teaching profession. Licensure pathways are available in three specialty areas: Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education. Candidates in these licensure programs complete both the standard Ed.M. curriculum and the identical professional education coursework as undergraduate teacher candidates. The Early Childhood Education specialization (covering birth through 2nd grade) trains educators for roles ranging from infant care to early elementary classrooms. Program graduates earn an early childhood license with special education certification for birth-to-preschool settings. As mandated by Illinois legislation and the Council on Teacher Education, all teacher preparation applicants must first pass the Basic Skills examination of the Illinois Licensure Testing System for program admission.
