The Department of Spanish and Portuguese provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, along with a specialized focus in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE). The MA in Portuguese with a Brazilian Studies concentration enables students to expand their expertise on Brazil through collaboration with core and affiliated faculty. Participants craft personalized academic paths by selecting from diverse upper-level interdisciplinary courses. SPAN 572 (or an equivalent theory and criticism course) is mandatory for all students, while teaching assistants must complete PORT 571, the department's teaching pro-seminar. Starting their second term, students work with Portuguese faculty through PORT 595 to develop their master's thesis. During subsequent semesters, they may enroll in PORT 599 (up to 16 credit hours) to complete a publication-worthy thesis under faculty guidance. The program requires 20 credit hours, including 4 hours each of PORT 595 independent study and PORT 599 thesis research within the department.
