The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science (GGIS) at the University of Illinois provides graduate studies culminating in Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Geography with a focus on Geographic Information Science (GIScience). This program explores the generation, examination, and utilization of digital geographic data to study economic, environmental, physical, and societal patterns across various spatial dimensions. Specialization options include: (1) GIScience theory and techniques covering domains like geographic information systems, dynamic modeling, remote sensing, spatial analysis, and inter-regional modeling, or (2) implementing GIScience approaches in health, urban, physical, or environmental geography. Transformative advancements are reshaping how we handle, interpret, and simulate geographic data. The GIScience program investigates digital geographic data's characteristics, the techniques for processing and modeling this information, and its significance in comprehending economic, ecological, and social changes from local to global perspectives. Our curriculum prioritizes GIScience methodology as the basis for employing geographic data to interpret these transformations and for creating novel analytical tools for future geographic exploration. Participants also develop a nuanced understanding of GIScience's societal impacts and the capabilities and constraints of its technologies.
