The Master of Arts in Comparative Literature program equips students with a strong foundation in the field while offering specialized instruction in a minimum of two national literatures, languages, and cultural traditions. Over four semesters, participants must achieve proficiency in two foreign languages in addition to English. Those focusing on pre-1800 European and/or American literary studies must demonstrate Latin proficiency. Language competency is assessed through either completing an advanced literature course for each selected language or passing a program-administered examination conducted with a language specialist. This flexible approach accommodates languages not typically offered through standard departmental courses.
