The University of Wyoming's English MA program has long featured a rhetoric and composition track with an interdisciplinary focus on teaching methods, while maintaining a broad foundation in literary studies.
Those specializing in rhetoric and composition complete diverse coursework both within and beyond the English Department. Departmental classes cover technical writing, digital composition, and cultural rhetoric, alongside core studies in composition theory and teaching methods. Cross-disciplinary options frequently include media studies, sociology, American culture, education theory, and rhetorical analysis.
This interdisciplinary approach shines through in recent graduate theses. One alumnus now teaching at university level collaborated with various campus experts to develop an educational model bridging academic and commercial spheres. Another worked with media specialists to explore wiki applications in modern writing instruction.
As the English department reevaluates graduate education to better serve student goals, we're developing tracks focused on real-world writing applications. Potential specializations include:
Corporate and Technical Communication
Digital Media Writing
Public Sector and Nonprofit Writing
These proposed tracks aim to preserve and build upon our established interdisciplinary tradition. We're also seeking to strengthen connections with other university divisions such as business schools, gender studies, and public policy programs.
