The Department of Spanish and Portuguese provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Spanish and Portuguese, along with a specialized focus in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE). The department features a graduate-level course in Catalan literature and maintains ties with the Latina/Latino Studies Program. Those pursuing Latina/Latino studies can collaborate with specialists across various fields including anthropology, history, political science, and sociology to develop tailored academic paths. Our faculty represents diverse research interests spanning literary/cultural studies, linguistics, and Latina/o Studies, with expertise in multiple languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, Basque, Catalan, and Quechua.

Qualification Requirements
The normal prerequisite for a graduate major is an undergraduate major in the corresponding Romance language or consent of the department. Students doing graduate work for any advanced degree in Spanish or Portuguese must possess a command of the language. TOEFL) and must score at least 88 on the internet-based test (iBT), they must also pass the speaking sub-section of the iBT with a minimum score of 24. A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (A=4.0), or comparable GPA for an international applicant, for last two years of undergraduate study is a minimum requirement for admission.
