Doctoral candidates undergo two key oral assessments: an initial qualifying exam and a culminating defense. The preliminary evaluation aims to assess whether the student possesses the necessary skills for original doctoral-level research, whether their proposed dissertation topic and scope are suitable, and their ability to articulate ideas effectively. The concluding defense evaluates whether both the dissertation and the student's presentation meet the rigorous standards required for a Ph.D.
