To earn a PhD, students must complete at least 72 credit hours, including 42 credits of coursework and 30 dissertation credits. With advisor approval, graduate-level courses from prior programs may count toward the PhD requirements. Each doctoral candidate must have a committee of at least five faculty members, including one representative from outside the department.
Mandatory coursework includes: Fundamentals of Research (GEOL 5020) during the first semester, two semesters (1 credit each) of the Distinguished Lecture Series, and the 1-credit Rocky Mountain field trip.
