Qualification Requirements
Students applying for admission to the PhD program are expected to have a strong undergraduate background in geography and/or related disciplines. In addition to other Graduate College admission requirements, a grade point average of at least 3.0 (A = 4.0) in the undergraduate major is required. PhD candidates are generally expected to have at least a 3.5 average in previous graduate work.
GRE scores are not required or evaluated for admission to our graduate programs.
Academic Statement of Purpose (1,000 words max)
How has your academic background, including any training, research, or other educational experiences, prepared you for graduate study?
What are your intellectual interests, and what scholarly questions are you interested in exploring in graduate study?
Are there any specific faculty members whose research interests align with your own with whom you would like to work?
How will our program help you achieve your academic and professional goals?
Personal Statement Short Answer Questions (250 words max per question)
1. Please describe any experiences and/or challenges that may have shaped your intellectual and personal development.
2. Provide insight into your potential to contribute to a community of inclusion, belonging, and respect in which scholars with diverse perspectives, abilities, and experiences can learn and collaborate productively and positively.
Three (3) letters of recommendation
Your recommenders should submit their letters electronically through the Graduate College online application system., who can then upload their letter to your application.
Transcript(s) and certification of degree(s)
Uploaded documents must include your name and the institution name. Include a copy of the transcript legend or university key (back page in most cases) for each institution. Do not mail transcripts or degree certificates to the department.
