The Doctoral Program empowers students to undertake substantial, innovative research projects that meaningfully advance the field of geography and connected disciplines. Through rigorous coursework, students develop mastery of contemporary scholarship within their specialized focus areas. The Preliminary Review and General Examination rigorously assess students' command of their selected sub-disciplines. Candidates have the option to produce either a traditional dissertation or three publication-ready articles. All research outputs must demonstrate exceptional methodological rigor and analytical precision.
Students who seek admission directly into the Ph.D. program should have either completed an M.A. in geography or done analogous post-baccalaureate work. Students who lack a geography M.A. and wish to enter the Ph.D. program should indicate that they wish to do so. Such applicants should upload all or most of their M.A. thesis in the applicant portal in the supplemental forms section.
