The Department of French and Italian provides graduate programs for both Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in French and Italian studies. Master's degree applicants can focus on French Studies, French Linguistics, French Language Learning, or Italian. For doctoral candidates in French, three specialization options exist: French Studies, French Linguistics, or Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE).

Graduate students are advised to explore adding a concentration, minor, or certificate to their studies. Students should discuss the value and practicality of these additional qualifications with their academic advisor beforehand. The interdisciplinary SLATE Ph.D. program merges advanced French studies with research in second language acquisition and teaching. This specialization benefits from faculty expertise across multiple disciplines related to language learning, allowing students to utilize resources from various departments in Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Education. The SLATE concentration serves as one of the specialization choices within the French Ph.D. program for eligible candidates.
