The UCSB English Department is committed to clearly stating our principles. Our foundational beliefs in promoting conversation, community involvement, and equity drive us to oppose all forms of discriminatory rhetoric, including racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, and other hateful expressions. Language holds immense power - in literature, culture, and everyday communication. Our words shape reality. Too frequently, language becomes a tool for division, degradation, and violence. We remain dedicated to examining language critically, understanding both its ability to inflict harm and provoke social conflict, as well as its potential to acknowledge historical disparities and help correct resulting inequities. Together with our students, we pledge to harness language as a creative force for building better worlds and envisioning fair, enduring tomorrows.
