The Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art (with concentrations) provides an in-depth exploration of art, design, and art history within the comprehensive academic environment of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Unlike the Bachelor of Fine Arts, this program combines intensive studio art training with the flexibility to explore other disciplines, ensuring a well-rounded education that extends beyond the studio. Students can specialize in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, New Media, or General Studio Art, allowing them to either diversify their skills or focus on a specific medium. These concentrations, marked on the degree, demonstrate proficiency in a chosen area, benefiting those pursuing graduate studies or careers requiring specialized artistic skills. The BA in Studio Art begins with foundational courses covering essential materials and creative methods, spanning traditional mediums like drawing, painting, and sculpture to digital tools such as coding and interactive media. Students explore visual expression across 2D (flat works like paintings), 3D (sculptural pieces), and 4D (time-based media like video and performance). As they progress, advanced students engage with a rotating selection of courses led by faculty with diverse artistic approaches, ensuring exposure to evolving techniques and ideas. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for a rapidly changing cultural landscape, equipping them with adaptable skills for post-graduation success. BA Studio Art students receive personal workspaces within a shared studio building, fostering a collaborative environment where they develop their artistic practice. This communal setting encourages a vibrant creative community, supporting exhibitions, performances, and critiques as students refine their focus.
