The painting and drawing program offers students a dedicated, specialized education in creating works using various painting and drawing mediums. It also accommodates students from other art disciplines who wish to explore painting and drawing as an elective. Degree options include B.A., B.S., or B.F.A., and selecting the right program should be done in consultation with an advisor.
This concentration introduces students to diverse painting and drawing techniques, helping them build essential skills and knowledge for artistic creation. It fosters intellectual and philosophical development while preparing students for long-term artistic and professional growth beyond their university years.
Introductory courses focus on foundational techniques, conceptual approaches, observational skills, and mastery of different media. Students are encouraged to experiment with personal and innovative imagery while refining their work through critiques. Exposure to class presentations, readings, field trips, and guest artists helps them connect art production with its underlying ideas.
Advanced courses push students to develop a unique artistic direction while refining techniques that support their conceptual or expressive goals. Independent thinking and personal strengths are emphasized, with elective options allowing exploration of other studio disciplines to enrich their approach.
The program is supported by two drawing studios, two painting studios (one reserved for advanced students), and a woodshop for fabrication. Students enjoy 24-hour access to the Studio Center, where these facilities are housed.
