Black Studies is a multidisciplinary academic discipline exploring the historical, political, and cultural contributions of African diaspora communities worldwide. The curriculum encompasses examinations of African American experiences, continental Africa, and the global African presence in regions like the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe. With robust connections to grassroots organizations and activist networks in Chicago, nationwide, and abroad, the program motivates students to apply their knowledge to contemporary social challenges. This liberal arts discipline cultivates essential competencies in analytical reasoning, research methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and effective communication.
Emerging from historical resistance, Black Studies traces its roots to 19th and early 20th century Black intellectual traditions, crystallizing during post-WWII civil rights movements. Student activism proved instrumental in institutionalizing this field. Presently, our distinguished faculty uphold this legacy by centering Black experiences in their scholarly work while generating transformative knowledge for marginalized communities.
Our dynamic learning community fosters collaborative initiatives extending beyond traditional coursework, including research endeavors, community art projects, and policy advocacy. Students are empowered to pursue their professional aspirations through the distinctive lens of Black Studies. Situated in Chicago's urban core and actively engaged with local partners, our department provides exceptional opportunities to examine intersections of race, socioeconomic status, gender, and the diverse realities of Black life.
