The Global Cultures program is a forward-thinking undergraduate major within the School of Humanities, dedicated to examining globalization's challenges and dynamics through a humanistic lens. This major equips students with essential 21st-century analytical skills and knowledge needed to navigate our increasingly interconnected world. Through this program, students gain valuable expertise that prepares them for diverse career paths across various industries. Faculty deliver engaging lectures and intimate seminar-style discussions in upper-level courses. The curriculum embraces an interdisciplinary methodology, incorporating insights from numerous departments across both Humanities (such as Art History, English, Film and Media Studies, History, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Spanish and Portuguese) and Social Sciences (including Anthropology, Chicano/Latino Studies, Political Science, and Sociology).
Current course offerings showcasing the program's diversity are available on the Global Cultures website. The curriculum spans an exceptionally wide range of topics, creating a vibrant academic atmosphere that draws students from varied backgrounds. Faculty members help students develop critical thinking skills and practical knowledge applicable to both domestic and global career opportunities. Global Cultures majors select both primary and secondary areas of focus from designated options, typically centered around geographic regions. With advisor approval, students can also create customized emphasis areas. All emphasis selections require consultation with faculty advisors and program committee approval.
Global Middle East: Explores the societies and traditions of North Africa, the Arab world, Turkey, and Iran, along with their connections to neighboring regions like sub-Saharan Africa, Central/South Asia, and Muslim communities in Europe and the Americas.
