Available through the prestigious Lionel Hampton School of Music, this program attracts students aspiring to careers as performers, composers, or educators. The comprehensive liberal arts curriculum also equips graduates for opportunities in business, law, healthcare, and various other professions. Music majors develop their artistry through performance, composition, analysis, and appreciation of music. Rigorous training hones musical abilities while coursework in theory, history, and performance establishes a solid grounding in humanities and social sciences. Admission requires a successful audition.
Many candidates in this program aim for public school music teaching certification. Prospective music educators must demonstrate proficiency on their primary instrument (or voice) through required auditions. The curriculum offers specializations in K-12 instrumental music, K-12 vocal music, or an instrumental track with vocal components. Secondary music educators can expand their qualifications with approximately 25-40 additional credits per subject area. The degree culminates with a semester-long off-campus student teaching placement. The Teacher Intern Handbook serves as a valuable guide throughout this practical teaching experience.
