The Mathematics Department at the University of Houston provides an outstanding setting for exploring mathematics and its practical uses. With roughly 10,000 students enrolled in math courses every semester, we're the university's biggest department by student numbers. Our program includes about 300 undergraduate majors and 80 graduate students, supported by a diverse faculty actively engaged in both research and teaching. Students in our programs benefit from learning with professors who are leading experts making important contributions to mathematical research. Our vibrant academic community features regular seminars, guest lectures, and various extracurricular options for undergraduates. The mathematics major allows students to focus on specialized research areas, with unique degree paths available in mathematical biology, financial mathematics, and teaching certification – all providing strong foundations for graduate studies or professional careers.
Faculty research and instruction cover numerous fields including applied mathematics, differential geometry, operator theory, differential equations, dynamical systems, artificial intelligence, numerical methods, complex analysis, mathematical biology, fluid dynamics, and other advanced topics.
