The BA/MA in Mathematics program offers students two specialization choices: mathematics or statistics. Both tracks focus on providing a broad understanding of fundamental concepts rather than deep specialization in a single area. The statistics pathway aims to develop versatile professionals ready to make meaningful impacts across various sectors including industry, healthcare, government, and academic research institutions.
Prospective students must complete prerequisite coursework (a 400-level or higher statistics course for the statistics track, or a 500-level or higher mathematics course for the mathematics track) before applying. Applicants must include a recommendation letter from the instructor of this prerequisite course in their submission materials.
Courses used to fulfill BA requirements cannot count toward MA requirements. To complete the BA/MA program, students must meet all College of Arts and Sciences BA requirements (including the Hub curriculum and mathematics major requirements) plus eight additional 500-level or higher courses for the MA that don't overlap with major requirements. The program requires completion of 144 units (equivalent to 36 four-credit courses). Students must also successfully pass MA-level comprehensive examinations.
