In small, team-oriented classes, students master stage management techniques while regularly interacting with professional artists and learning industry standards. The program offers diverse opportunities, from contemporary plays to operas and classic productions. Graduates from the Stage Management program secure positions across local, regional, and national theater companies, with the University of Houston boasting a perfect job placement rate after graduation.
During their initial two years, students build core competencies in technical production, stage management, design, visual communication, script analysis, and historical studies of architecture and costumes. This training combines academic instruction with practical experience, requiring participation in at least one production each term. As they advance, students refine leadership, communication, and critical-thinking abilities while exploring production management and related disciplines like opera, ballet, film, and event coordination. Each semester, upper-level students serve as stage managers or assistants for productions, culminating their education with a professional internship at a local theater.
