The Bachelor of Arts in Art with a Studio Art Concentration equips students with hands-on experience and technical abilities across various artistic disciplines. The program covers Ceramics, Digital Media & Emerging Technology, Painting and Drawing, Printmaking, Photography, Sculpture, and Textiles, while also fostering interdisciplinary exploration. Students build a diverse foundation by experimenting with different artistic mediums and methods. Art History courses enhance writing abilities, research skills, and understanding of global art traditions and institutions. The curriculum progresses from introductory (200-level) through foundation (300-level), intermediate (400-level), and advanced (500-level) coursework. Students must complete at least one 300-level Foundation course, ideally before advancing to higher-level classes. Seniors undertake an interdisciplinary capstone (ART 600: Studio Process and Professional Practices or ART 619 Exhibition Design), integrating research, writing, and critique to evaluate their artistic development within professional contexts. The program leverages the Bay Area's vibrant arts scene through museum visits, gallery tours, and artist lectures. Internship opportunities provide real-world experience, while ART 509 (a 1-unit Art Professional Service Practicum) offers practical training in studio operations, gallery work, and museum environments through roles like research assistants or production aides.
