Founded in 1973, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning offers an interdisciplinary program encompassing all planning disciplines, with special emphasis on the Asia-Pacific area, environmental planning and sustainable development, community engagement in planning, housing solutions, and disaster preparedness. The MURP program has earned recognition among the nation's top 25 urban planning programs in Planetizen's Guide (4th Edition), ranking 7th in the Western region and 3rd for student diversity. DURP enhances its academic focus through hands-on planning initiatives and research projects across Hawaii and the Asia-Pacific. The department is also celebrated for its strong 'ohana spirit—the Hawaiian concept of family that includes the broader community.
