The Master of Urban Planning (MUP) program equips students to excel as professionals and leaders in urban planning by offering comprehensive knowledge and cutting-edge methodologies. This program also serves as a foundation for pursuing a Ph.D. in planning or securing advanced research roles. The concentration emphasizes mastering key concepts, theories, and analytical approaches related to land use and transportation planning. Land serves as the fundamental resource for community development, distinguished by its limited availability and fixed geographic position. Land usage influences ecosystems, interacts with adjacent developments, and relies on transportation networks and infrastructure for functionality. Land use planning shapes the physical spaces where we reside and conduct business. Transportation systems link individuals to daily activities and connect neighborhoods. Transportation and land use are interdependent and cannot be considered separately. These planning disciplines represent core functions of municipal, regional, and sometimes state planning organizations, as well as private consulting firms that assist public entities. The foundational course UP 503, Physical Planning, offers an overview of this field. Additional recommended courses enhance understanding of land use and transportation planning theories and methods. Electives allow for specialized focus or exploration of related subject areas.
