The Master of Science program in microbiology aims to equip you with foundational knowledge in the discipline while developing technical research skills and encouraging innovative, independent thought. Plan A typically requires two or more years to finish an original thesis, while Plan B (available only to spring 2007 or earlier admits) involves comprehensive exams instead of a thesis and generally spans two years. Students entering fall 2007 onward must complete Plan A.
The University of Hawaii's School of Life Sciences MS program offers advanced microbiology coursework and intensive research training. Participants learn to develop and implement original research projects using both traditional and cutting-edge methods. Our goal is to prepare graduates with comprehensive microbiology expertise and specialized knowledge, enabling them to pursue careers as professional microbiologists or continue into doctoral or professional programs.
