As students explore dramatic structure, dramaturgy, and collaborative play creation in our program, they're guided to develop their unique artistic voices as emerging playwrights. UHM's playwriting curriculum fosters original, groundbreaking works inspired by Hawaii's rich cultural traditions and unique island identity. The program actively supports theatrical experimentation through devised theater approaches. Developing plays receive frequent public readings with engaging audience feedback sessions. Thesis projects culminate in full productions at the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre.

To be eligible, an applicant must hold or expect to hold prior to matriculation a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, or an equivalent degree from a recognized non-U.S. institution of higher education.
