The dance department provides several graduate programs: MA Plan A, MA Plan B, and MFA. GRE scores aren't necessary for admission to any dance master's program, though international applicants must achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 600. MA Plan A students complete a written thesis, while Plan B involves extra coursework culminating in a capstone project or paper. The MFA program demands a performance/choreography thesis with supporting written documentation. All graduate applicants must show sufficient undergraduate dance training (or related field), provide a writing sample like a major paper, and arrange for three recommendation letters to be sent directly to the department. MFA applicants must additionally submit choreography and performance videos.
The MA Plan A focuses on dance performance studies research. This 36-credit program requires DNCE 617, 651, 652, 654/655, 673, and 700 (6 credits), 3 credits in 400-level Asian/Pacific performance courses, 6 credits of related electives, 3 dance elective credits, and 3 general elective credits - all tied to thesis research. Students must demonstrate proficiency in a research-relevant foreign language through examination or four semesters of study.
