The Community, Cultural, and Developmental (CCD) program explores how children and adults grow within their social and cultural environments. Our approach combines theoretical frameworks with practical social initiatives. We employ strengths-based methods to foster inclusivity and equity, while examining life transitions through a developmental lens.

While sharing common ground with other community-focused programs nationwide, our curriculum uniquely incorporates cultural psychology into both studies and research. This reflects our conviction that individual abilities, social connections, and institutional participation are deeply interconnected - human behavior can only be fully comprehended within its sociocultural framework.

Distinctive program elements include balanced attention to both qualitative and quantitative methods across coursework, research, and fieldwork. These components collectively reinforce the synthesis of community, cultural, and developmental concepts.

For instance, our students receive interdisciplinary training covering lifespan development in social interactions, cognitive processes, communication, and emotional growth, alongside core community psychology principles. Our research adopts a cultural-developmental viewpoint, investigating how personal characteristics and environmental factors jointly influence psychological health and maturation. Each graduate collaborates with their advisor to specialize in either community or developmental psychology.

Through our partnership with Victoria University's cross-cultural psychology program in Wellington, New Zealand, students can participate in international exchanges for academic, research, or practical experiences. Those completing a semester abroad earn a special Certificate acknowledging their global studies.
Participants must consult with advisors to choose a primary concentration (Cluster 1 or 2) and complete two courses in this focus area, plus one course from each remaining cluster.
