The Mathematics Department's PhD program consists of four key elements: graduate-level courses, qualifying examinations, a comprehensive assessment, and the composition and defense of a doctoral dissertation.
This program aims to cultivate your skills to a level where you can produce novel mathematical research. We provide an extensive selection of foundational graduate classes along with specialized topic courses, supplemented by regular faculty-led seminars. Throughout your studies, you'll build comprehensive knowledge of advanced mathematics, enhance your problem-solving skills and innovative thinking, and engage with pioneering research in various disciplines represented by our faculty - ultimately leading to your dissertation's completion and defense. The journey includes several checkpoints: completing a minimum of 10 courses (with specific distribution requirements), successfully passing two out of four qualifying exams (covering algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, and topology), and undertaking a comprehensive examination under faculty guidance.
