Hartt's music history program allows you to study Western music within its historical and cultural frameworks. From introductory surveys to specialized seminars, majors and minors develop a thorough knowledge of all Western musical eras. A key aspect of our program is customizable elective courses tailored to student interests, frequently designed based on current enrollment. Recent offerings have covered topics like opera history, string quartet repertoire, C.P.E. Bach, pre-tonal theory, medieval influences in contemporary media, cognitive psychology, and critical editing, with additional options in jazz and African-American musical traditions through the Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Division. Music history majors can select either a scholarship/research track or performance practices concentration. The scholarship track involves systematic musical analysis through academic writing, while the performance practice option blends musical performance with historical techniques, ornamentation, and related studies.
The scholarship and research track prepares students to engage with diverse scholarly methods for analyzing musical traditions across time. Those choosing this path will refine their analytical skills through demanding coursework, structured writing assignments, and presentations culminating in a bachelor's or master's thesis.
