Exploring the relationship between music and culture is central to Pacific's Music History degree, available as either a standalone BM program or as a minor paired with any other BM degree.
While all conservatory students engage with music history to understand musical trends, composers, and specific works, undergraduate Music History majors enjoy a distinctive opportunity. Pacific's program provides comprehensive exposure to musical periods and styles while fostering communication and research skills in musical contexts. Graduates have pursued diverse paths including doctoral studies in musicology and ethnomusicology, archival work, music journalism, conducting, and performance careers enriched by historical knowledge. The program emphasizes practical skill development through coursework, independent research, and personalized guidance tailored to your aspirations. Student projects have covered topics from Schoenberg-Mahler connections and French baroque music to contemporary genres like hyperpop, as well as studies on underrepresented composers in classical music. The department cultivates thoughtful perspectives on the music we create, appreciate, and perform.
Prospective students are encouraged to arrange a consultation with program director Dr. Sarah Waltz during audition days or at another convenient time to discuss the program's offerings.
