The MFA Theatre program specializing in Design & Technology enables students to concentrate on costume, set, or lighting design. While stage design remains the core focus, participants also develop skills to adapt these design concepts across various platforms such as film, television, animation, gaming, and interactive exhibits.

Program participants must demonstrate competence in multiple design disciplines and refine their abilities by creating designs for University Theatre performances. They also cultivate expertise in an additional design specialization. Beyond mastering conventional methods and tools, students receive training in digital media and advanced computer-aided design (CAD) applications.

Design candidates advance through progressively challenging roles, starting as assistant designers, then taking on one or more small-scale productions, and ultimately designing costumes, sets, or lighting for significant theatrical or media projects.

Qualification Requirements

MFA applicants generally begin the process with interviews/portfolio reviews that take place during a campus visit or at national conferences such as URTA, LINKS, USITT or SETC. Those applying to the design program should submit a current resume and portfolio of their work in either traditional or electronic format (websites are permissible) to the head of design Ivan Ingermann at [email protected]

If interviewed on campus or at one of the above conferences, this satisfies the portfolio requirement, though it may be beneficial to also send portfolio materials or a link to your personal website directly to the head of design or to the design faculty member who is the lead designer in your principal area of interest (scenic, costume or lighting design). You can also include a link to your portfolio on your resume.

Next, an application for admission must be submitted online to the Graduate School.

The GRE is not required for admission to our MFA programs, however, if an applicant's undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, then GRE scores near or above the 20th percentile in verbal and quantitative areas will provide valuable evidence for potential success in graduate studies.
Transcripts of all previous academic work must also be provided to the graduate school (not the department). Unofficial transcripts are allowed for the online application, but if accepted to UGA you will have to supply official transcripts before starting classes.
Your online application will also include three letters of recommendation to be transmitted via the online application (they cannot be submitted to the department).
You will also be required to upload a clear statement of objectives/purpose in pursuing this degree plus your resume.
