Iowa boasts a rich heritage in collegiate filmmaking that dates back to the 1930s. Graduate studies in Film and Television began in the 1950s with the establishment of the Department of Radio, Television and Film, complete with cutting-edge production facilities. The university has been recognized for its avant-garde film work since the 1970s.
Currently, our three-year MFA in Film and Video Production provides full funding. The curriculum aims to cultivate students' creative perspectives through theoretical foundations, refine their technical abilities in cinematography, audio, post-production, and other areas, build an impressive body of work, and develop career-ready competencies (grant writing, festival submissions, etc.) for academic or industry positions. Every participant gains valuable teaching experience, a crucial asset for academic careers. Our program specializes in 16mm filmmaking, independent cinema, and diverse documentary approaches.
