The University of Georgia's three-year MFA in Performance program trains artists for professional work in theater, film, and media, as well as for educational roles in universities, community colleges, or high schools.
This MFA program aims to shape performers into exceptional storytellers, creative professionals, educators, and innovative entrepreneurs.
By enhancing each artist's fundamental abilities, the curriculum fosters personal artistic expression through rigorous training in diverse methods, technical skills, historical contexts, theoretical frameworks, and practical applications. Recognizing the importance of versatile performers, students can explore courses in dramaturgy, script interpretation, socially engaged theater, multicultural performance history, and digital production. While following a shared foundational curriculum, students can customize their studies to align with personal aspirations. The program tailors each cohort member's artistic path according to their unique talents and objectives.
Performance training at UGA includes acting, vocal, and movement classes incorporating techniques from Stanislavski, Meisner, Chekhov, Alexander, Linklater, LeCoq, and Laban. Specialized courses in solo performance, creative development, genre exploration, and Viewpoints methodology empower actors to refine their artistic vision. Annual performance opportunities include mainstage productions, graduate ensemble showcases, or student-created works, demonstrating program progress and individual specialization. Second-year students receive significant roles in university productions, while third-year candidates develop a culminating thesis project to complete their degree.
