The Master of Science in Comparative Biomedical Sciences focuses on interdisciplinary and translational methods in biomedical research. This program is perfect for students aiming to enter PhD programs in biomedical research or health-related professional fields.
The Comparative Biomedical Sciences MS program educates students in biomedical research with a strong focus on cross-disciplinary methods for studying animal and human health. Graduates will gain foundational knowledge in comparative biomedical sciences within specialized tracks such as physiology and pharmacology, pathology, infectious diseases, population health, or veterinary biosciences and diagnostic imaging.

This college-wide MS program is overseen by the Office of the Dean through the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Affairs. It welcomes both professionals with degrees in healthcare fields and graduate students with robust biological training. Additional study options include Avian Medicine, Food Animal Medicine, and Zoological Medicine, with the latter exclusively for veterinarians accepted into UGA's residency program.

Designed to be completed in 2-3 years, this research-intensive program fosters interdisciplinary learning, translational research, professional development, and biomedical education to equip students for impactful roles in modern biomedical and veterinary sciences.

Eligible applicants include those with bachelor's degrees as well as holders of professional degrees (DVM, MD, DDS).

Pathology is fundamental to understanding animal and human health. As the science of disease processes and diagnosis, it is vital for detecting and managing conditions that impact public health.

Our work spans various settings—from microscopes where we analyze tissue samples from sick animals, to laboratories where we conduct disease research and develop treatments, to classrooms where we teach veterinary students about disease mechanisms.

Qualification Requirements

The CBS program is a research-based training program that is available to students with a BS or BA degree, a DVM is not required.

Applicants must first apply to the UGA Graduate School. Requirements include, but may not be limited to, a statement of interest, resume or CV, all official college transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation. International students may be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.

You should get letters from professors who have taught you and know you well. Their letters should describe your academic work in detail, so that the Graduate Committee can be assured that you can complete a rigorous graduate program. If you have done undergraduate research, the committee will expect a letter from the professor who supervised that work. Letters from work supervisors may be of value to document your work ethic.

No two statements are alike. Faculty are most interested with your academic and research background, interest in pursuing the degree, research interests, and professional plans. You should also state whether you will need financial assistance in order to pursue the degree. We suggest no more than 3 pages double-spaced. Most applicants are able to express themselves in two double-spaced pages. If more is needed, that is acceptable.

The GRE is NOT required for admission, however, if you have a recent (within 5 years) GRE score over 300, you are welcome to submit that information. Higher GRE scores may offset lower GPAs.

Applicants who do not intend to pursue a degree, but who wish to take courses for professional advancement, licensure, or certification purposes, and who hold a baccalaureate degree or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution, should apply for nondegree status.

Nondegree applicants must submit the following to the Office of Research and Graduate Affairs in the College of Veterinary Medicine in addition to the Graduate School's requirements.

Application for admission to the Graduate School
Statement of Interest
Departmental (MCBS) supplemental application
R'sume
You do not need to find a major professor, and there is no financial aid available for non-degree students.

Minimum TOEFL score requirement: overall score of 80 with at least 20 on speaking and writing
Minimum IELTS score requirement: overall band-width of 6.5, with no single band (score) below 6.0.

In addition to the requirements of the Graduate School of The University of Georgia, applicants are required to have a DVM or equivalent degree, a veterinary school grade point average of 3.0 or higher, a combined score (verbal and quantitative) of at least 1000 on the Graduate Record Examination, official transcripts of all college courses, and written references from at least three persons. Experience in the poultry industry is desirable.
