The EdS in Middle Grades Education is designed for educators and professionals holding a master's degree in a relevant discipline. Our top-ranked program integrates specialized knowledge about young adolescents with focused studies in your preferred subject area—language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies.

Enhance your expertise in addressing the distinctive educational challenges of middle grades while exploring the cognitive, social, and developmental needs of young adolescents.

As a pioneer in middle school educational reform, our program stands among the nation's longest-established EdS programs specifically tailored for middle grades. You'll engage in theoretical exploration and research with distinguished faculty while implementing your knowledge through collaborations with area schools. This degree requires completion of 30 semester hours (10 courses).

Qualification Requirements

Must hold a baccalaureate degree and a master's degree from an accredited college or university
Cumulative grade point for all undergraduate courses should be 2.8 or above on a four-point scale
Must have taken the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test
GRE: minimum scores of 146 verbal and 140 quantitative
Miller Analogies Test: minimum score of 402

When all of the Graduate School's application materials have been received, they are reviewed by the Middle Grades Education program faculty. The faculty may request additional materials from applicants before making a recommendation on the application. The faculty make a recommendation to the Department of Educational Theory and Practice's graduate coordinator, who in turn makes a recommendation to the Graduate School. The final decision on admissions is made by the Graduate School. Applicants and the department will receive notification directly from the Graduate School concerning a decision on acceptance.

Minimum TOEFL score requirement: overall score of 80 with at least 20 on speaking and writing
Minimum IELTS score requirement: overall band-width of 6.5, with no single band (score) below 6.0
