The Department of Geography provides advanced degree programs for MA, MS, and PhD candidates, specializing in physical geography, human geography, and geographic information systems (GIS). Faculty expertise spans biogeography, landform evolution, quaternary research, geoarchaeology, climate science, social theory, workforce studies, political economics, gender studies, demographics, urban planning, economic systems, social structures, regional development, cartographic design, aerial photography interpretation, satellite imagery analysis, and GIS technologies.
The department maintains collaborative relationships with multiple university entities including the College of Environment and Design, Archaeological Sciences Center, Marine Sciences program, Asian Studies, Women's Studies, and African Studies departments, Humanities Center, Government Institute, Terry College of Business, and Behavioral Research Institute. Through its participation in the Inter University Consortium for Political and Social Research, the university offers extensive resources for social science investigations. The department hosts the Center for Remote Sensing and Mapping Science (CRMS), which conducts cross-disciplinary research involving image and cartographic data processing for applications across physical, biological, and mapping disciplines.
