The Department of Communication Studies (previously known as Speech Communication) provides MA and PhD degree programs. Students can specialize in either Interpersonal & Health or Rhetorical Studies. The graduate program aims to equip students with research methodologies for advancing communication knowledge, develop advanced teaching skills for diverse audiences, and promote a spirit of intellectual curiosity and public service. This department emphasizes personalized education, supporting each graduate student's unique research interests through rigorous academic training while encouraging cross-disciplinary exploration.

Qualification Requirements

PhD Program Admission: To be admitted to our PhD program we look for graduate GPAs of at least 3.5, as well as exceptionally strong letters and an excellent paper.
All international applicants must have a TOEFL iBT speaking score of at least 26 or an IELTS score of 8 or higher to be considered for a teaching assistantship. TOEFL scores are required as part of the application.

Minimum TOEFL score requirement: overall score of 80 with at least 20 on speaking and writing
Minimum IELTS score requirement: overall band-width of 6.5, with no single band (score) below 6.0

We do not accept MCAT, LSAT, or GMAT scores.
