The Plant Biology major provides students with comprehensive knowledge of plant and fungal biology, addressing contemporary environmental and societal issues while enhancing career prospects. This program shares foundational courses with general biology (such as genetics and evolution) but offers greater flexibility to create an interdisciplinary curriculum, allowing specializations in ecology/environment or biotechnology/bioinformatics/genomics. Upper-level plant biology courses often feature small class sizes, fostering interactive learning through combined lab and lecture formats. A key aspect of our department is hands-on research, as faculty-mentored fieldwork or lab projects immerse students in scientific inquiry while developing career-ready skills. The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Plant Biology is a liberal arts degree with a plant science focus, equipping graduates for careers in ecology or biotechnology—fields critical to understanding Earth's ecosystems and sustaining global food, energy, and material resources.
