The Plant Biology Concentration provides students with comprehensive knowledge about plant structure, classification, evolution, ecology, functionality, development, and molecular biology. This program covers both wild and cultivated/agricultural plant species.
Students can choose between two tracks: (1) Plant Evolutionary Biology or (2) Plant Biotechnology. Track (1) emphasizes plant evolution, environmental adaptation, and ecological relationships. Participants must complete foundational courses in plant biology and physiology, plus at least six additional credits from specialized subjects including plant anatomy, cell biology, development, ecology, taxonomy, and evolutionary studies. Track (2) caters to students focusing on plant molecular biology and its agricultural uses, with core coursework in Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering of Plants, and Plant Physiology. A minimum of seven credits in plant biotechnology electives is required. While students should primarily select from the approved course list, they may request approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies for unlisted relevant courses through a formal petition. Note: Teaching Assistant roles do not qualify for concentration credit.
