UGA's Special Education program equips future educators for certification across three specialized tracks tailored to career goals: The Adapted/Autism focus trains professionals to teach pre-K to 12th grade students with significant disabilities. This track develops essential competencies in adapted special education through hands-on classroom experience across all grade levels, concluding with a student teaching assignment at the preferred educational stage. The General track prepares educators to work with pre-K to 12th grade students having mild disabilities, available either completely online or at UGA's Griffin campus. This program cultivates fundamental general special education expertise, featuring extensive practical training across various grade levels before a final student teaching experience. The Birth through Kindergarten concentration develops skills for teaching both typically developing children and those with disabilities from infancy to kindergarten age. The curriculum emphasizes inclusive, collaborative teaching methods and family-centered support, with practical training opportunities spanning infant/toddler, preschool, pre-K, and kindergarten classrooms. Program completers qualify for Georgia's renewable teaching certification in both birth-through-kindergarten and preschool special education.
