This 72-credit dual master's and specialist degree program equips students with the specialized training needed to work as school counselors in elementary, middle, or high schools across both public and private sectors. The M.Ed./Ed.S. and MAE/Ed.S. in School Counseling prepares graduates with the foundational competencies necessary for Florida Department of Education certification in school counseling. The comprehensive 72-credit curriculum delivers targeted instruction to develop the professional skills required for school counseling positions at all grade levels.
Participants in this School Counseling program - which holds state approval along with accreditation from NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) and CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) - must successfully complete all sections of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE). This includes the General Knowledge test (covering mathematics, English language skills, reading comprehension, and essay writing), the Professional Education exam, and the Guidance and Counseling K-12 Subject Area Exam prior to program completion. For inquiries regarding certification requirements or other program-related questions, students may contact the College of Education Office of Student Services.
