Master of Arts in Education (M.A.E). This program equips students specializing in English Language Arts with research-backed teaching methodologies and learning theories that foster language and literacy growth. Participants gain expertise in the core literacy practices of English language arts and develop skills to effectively implement these approaches. The curriculum also explores how contemporary educational challenges relate to literacy. Specialization options include Media Literacy Education (with online MLE course availability) and other customized focus areas. The M.A.E program culminates in either a thesis or project, with students working alongside faculty advisors to create a personalized study plan aligned with their career aspirations in literacy education. The 30-credit program requires a 3-6 credit research or instructional project completed with faculty guidance. Note: This degree does not provide professional teaching certification. Students must have a recognized baccalaureate, graduate or professional degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or a comparable degree from an international institution. For applicants with a bachelor’s degree only, a minimum grade point average of B (3.0), calculated from all grades and credits after the semester where the applicant reached 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores that are acceptable to the applicant’s intended academic unit or, for select programs, at least 465 on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
For applicants from countries (including Puerto Rico) where English is not the official language, a minimum score on one of these English Language Skills tests: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 550 paper, or 80 Internet; International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 77, or documented successful completion of the University of Florida English Language Institute program.
