The core objective of any Ph.D. program is to train students to become independent researchers in their chosen field. At the University of Florida, doctoral candidates specializing in audiology, speech, language, or swallowing often pursue studies and research not just within our department but also collaborate with other campus departments such as biomedical engineering, dentistry, gerontology, linguistics, medicine, psychology, and special education, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of these fields. The curriculum also incorporates training in research design and analysis, equipping students with the skills to undertake innovative research that contributes to both foundational and applied disciplines. The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences is dedicated to attracting, enrolling, mentoring, graduating, and assisting in the placement of students who demonstrate exceptional ethical and academic standards.
We collaborate with the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy departments through the Rehabilitation Science Ph.D. program, which offers three specialized tracks: Movement Science, Communication and Swallowing Sciences and Disorders (CSSD), and Disability, Occupation, and Participation (DOPS). While most students focusing on audiology or speech pathology research opt for the CSSD track, some may choose Movement Science. All Rehabilitation Sciences Ph.D. students complete shared foundational courses alongside specialized coursework tailored to their concentration.
