Nuclear engineering encompasses designing, developing, and operating nuclear power systems, along with numerical modeling of nuclear processes, health physics, radiation safety, imaging techniques, radiation measurement, national security, non-proliferation efforts, and material inspection through radiation methods. The field also applies radiation in medical diagnostics and treatments, as well as in food processing, industrial applications, and manufacturing quality control. State-of-the-art experimental resources are provided, featuring a 100 KW research reactor, a neutron activation analysis lab, and a D-D neutron source for radiation research. Specialized nuclear instrumentation is housed in radiation detection labs within the Nuclear Science and Nuclear Field Buildings.

To develop expertise in a secondary discipline, students should focus their elective courses within one specialized area. Working with an advisor, these electives enable concentration in reactor engineering, reactor operations, radioisotope applications, nuclear radiation technology, or radiation's interaction with biological systems.
