Nuclear power stands as the primary provider of clean electricity in the United States, with emerging technologies poised to expand its role in our transition to a carbon-neutral economy. Many nuclear engineers focus on designing, constructing, and managing nuclear facilities — currently utilizing uranium fission, but eventually transitioning to hydrogen fusion. As a zero-emission energy source, nuclear power serves as a stable and consistent complement to other renewable sources such as wind, solar, and hydropower. Nuclear energy systems hold even greater promise as innovative applications emerge for decarbonizing industrial operations including hydrogen generation, water purification, and metal production.

Current Mars exploration vehicles rely on nuclear energy systems, and future interstellar missions will require nuclear technology to carry astronauts beyond Earth's orbit. Nuclear engineers develop radioisotope power units that deliver continuous electricity without mechanical components to space probes and planetary rovers, enabling extended-duration missions. Nuclear propulsion systems reduce interplanetary travel durations by months, while surface power units guarantee dependable energy after planetary landing.

Through sophisticated radiation detection technology, we can identify concealed explosives and nuclear materials in cargo shipments. Nuclear engineers integrate radiation sources and detection equipment that employ penetrating rays capable of visualizing objects through dense barriers while also analyzing their internal composition. They further enhance these systems by implementing machine learning and artificial intelligence to synthesize data from multiple sensors for deeper analysis.
