The Ceramics Department is a vibrant collective of undergraduates, post-baccalaureate students, graduates, instructors, and technical personnel, all working to advance artistic vision, technical skills, and conceptual thinking. Through one-on-one guidance, group discussions, and critique sessions, the program creates diverse opportunities for idea-sharing within the broader arts community, with special focus on ceramics. Students encounter a rigorous studio education that blends technical and intellectual pursuits in an immersive setting. The program fosters close faculty interaction and supports interdisciplinary exploration. Beyond formal instruction, students join H.O.T (Handbuilt Or Thrown) Clay, a lively student group that organizes visiting artist sessions, gallery shows, pottery sales, and yearly trips to the National Council of Education in the Ceramic Arts conference. The undergraduate ceramics curriculum is built on providing both comprehensive and specialized knowledge in the field. Learning encompasses hands-on experimentation with clay materials and various firing techniques (electric, gas, wood, raku, primitive, and vapor). Students examine 2D and 3D design principles as they apply to ceramic works, while studying historical influences and modern trends alongside notable artists and their creations. The studio setting equally emphasizes functional pottery—exploring shape and decoration—and ceramic sculpture. Alongside classic hand-building, wheel-throwing, and mold-making, the program teaches conceptual growth and avant-garde forming methods. Practical business experience comes through participation in the Florida Potter's Guild's biannual sales (a student-run initiative). Frequent visiting artist workshops complement the core curriculum, exposing students to diverse professional approaches.
