The MEMS program takes an interdisciplinary approach to examine the unique cultural structures of medieval and early modern Europe.
Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS) serves as an interdisciplinary platform exploring European culture from these historical periods and its lasting impact on contemporary society. This multidisciplinary framework allows examination of cultural systems that transcend traditional academic divisions. Through the IDS major in MEMS, students gain insight into the beliefs, priorities, perspectives, and innovations of medieval and early modern societies (including monastic, knightly, rural, and emerging urban communities), while engaging with timeless literary masterpieces spanning epic poetry, drama, and romantic tales. The program encourages applying these historical insights to modern debates surrounding identity, colonialism, technological impacts, gender concepts, and narrative forms.
MEMS appeals to students desiring a major that emphasizes analytical reading, independent thought, and imaginative engagement, while offering flexibility in designing their academic path. As it delivers comprehensive liberal arts training rather than narrow specialization, the MEMS IDS major provides strong foundational preparation for diverse professions such as legal practice, healthcare, information science, media, public service, and education.
