As an undergraduate field of study, History equips students with crucial knowledge and abilities to engage in our ever-more interconnected global community and marketplace. Focusing on societies, cultures, and political systems across the United States and internationally, the History Program fosters comprehension of human behavior and relationships that serve as vital context for contemporary pursuits in business, law, journalism, politics, education, or public history (including roles with the National Park Service, museums, historic preservation, and similar fields). Beyond subject mastery, students cultivate advanced reading comprehension, persuasive writing techniques, and logical, analytical reasoning grounded in evidence. These versatile competencies make history graduates particularly attractive to modern employers.
The College of Liberal Arts establishes the groundwork for a well-rounded education, empowering graduates to think critically, make informed choices, ground decisions in historical and cultural awareness, and lead fulfilling personal and professional lives. Acknowledging liberal education's fundamental value, the university mandates that over half of the general education requirements be completed through the College of Liberal Arts, with growing numbers of students selecting majors or minors among its nine departments and specialized programs.
